Weekly Email 26: Que des bénédictions!! I te mau haamaitairaa!!
wowowowow this week has seriously been the BEST of my entire mission so far! Every day was just so good and I’d come home feeling like I was on cloud 9. Our district leader challenged us to get either Standards of Excellence (3 fixed baptisms, 6 amis at church, 3 new amis) for one week or Tableaux d’honneur (2 out of the 3 above categories) for two weeks, so me and Soeur Maitere worked really hard to get that! We got FIVE new amis this week woot woot! One was a member reference, one was a missionary reference, one was from contacting, and two were from recontacting! This was the first time I’ve really pushed myself to get a certain number of amis in a week, and it was awesome! It’s fun trying to find the people the Lord has been preparing for you. And Tevai says she wants to get baptized, so now we have 2 fixed baptisms! So we got super close to getting Standards this week! We still got tableaux d’honneur, but we want to see if we can hit Standards this upcoming week! We have eleven baptême potentiels, but they all seem to have some sort of block we just can’t get pass. With some people I really feel like I’ve tried everything, but I won’t give up!
This week was just the best too because me and Soeur Maitere met/started teaching some really awesome people! They are just incredible examples to me of faith, even though some are new investigators. They can recognize God’s hand in their life so easily and already know what they want to do to change and how to get there. They don’t need anyone to push them or tell them what to do which is awesome! I am so proud of them and their examples! I remember the first thing that was said in my setting-apart blessing for the mission was “You will meet incredible people”. So true!
This past week on Huahine:
We started teaching our DMP’s sister in law this week! When I found out she wasn’t a member I was MINDBLOWN because she comes to church every week. Apparently she’s been coming to church since 1999?! I’m glad she decided to take the lessons now, our first visit with her was super awesome and there was a very special spirit there!
This past week I made a goal to study Tahitian more, since I got to the field I’ve mostly been studying French on the days when I have time to do language study. I love studying French grammar and vocab because it makes sense to me, Tahitian not so much. Within 5 minutes of looking at my grammar book I want to throw it out the window in frustration. But I remember how before my mission learning stick seemed impossible to me, and now I’m driving that every day without any problems. When I first started my mission speaking French seemed impossible, and I never thought I’d be able to express myself how I wanted to. But now I’ve come such a long way in such a short time! My goal is to speak Tahitian as well as I speak French, don’t know if that will ever happen, but the least I can do is try. Nothing is impossible when you have an all-powerful God on your side!
Our little English class is growing and I am so excited! Two new people came this past week and 2 more people said they want to come this week! I’ve also been making posters and hanging them up around town to advertise it more. We have a lot of non-members attending!
Soeur Maitere and I have been doing a lot of small acts of service this week and it’s been so fun! We gave drinks to some construction workers and mechanics and the men who do our yard work, which they were happy about since it was really hot that day. One of our ami’s houses flooded because of the heavy rain this week, so we went over to help them clean up! We also brought them a huge bag of food. Our ami had to hold back tears when we gave it to her, it was so sweet! It makes you feel good to be able to help the people you love!
This week I did door to door contacting for the first time, there were times we had planned to do it before but something always came up or we didn’t have time. We met this super nice Adventist lady, and now whenever she sees us she says hi! We sang hymns at every house we went to, I love music! It brings the Spirit so fast.
On Friday night we also went and talked to people downtown. We saw a man sitting alone, I felt like we should go talk to him so we brought him some pineapple and went over to say hi. I think he appreciated it since he seemed kinda lonely, he lives all alone here and was waiting for a taxi to bring him back to his empty house. We had a good conversation and told him he is a son of a Heavenly Father who loves him very much! He said he saw us going around talking to people and he said “It’s good what you do. That’s what Christ did- he wasn’t just at the chapel on Sunday, he was everywhere”. I LOVE that our job as missionaries is just to talk to everyone! You can meet really awesome people and have great conversations! I love making new friends! Luckily people here are super nice and open and make it easy for us. We are spoiled, I know ;)
Friday night when we were downtown we also handed out macadamia chocolates to people. There was a huge group of people fly fishing so we went to talk to them (also in French the word pecheur means sinner and also fisherman, so we made a lot of jokes about that to each other hahah). I got to reel in and cast out the line and it was so fun!! The pecheurs were all super cool and we had a good time with them! Also now I know how to fly fish so that’s a bonus.
When we were contacting we met a man named Mahare who makes traditional Tahitian dance costumes for the Haeva by hand!! It was nuts! He weaves the skirts and makes all these headdresses too! It was so cool to see.
Saturday our propretaire and his wife took us out to lunch at the Huahine Yacht Club! They are the sweetest!!
Wednesday was my last lesson with Hoarai. It was sad for me because I’ve been teaching him every week for the past four months! But I’m so proud of him, he is such a good boy and marvelous things are ahead of him in life. It has been a privilege and a joy to have been able to get to know him, to teach him and see him progress, and to have him be my first baptism! His family is so amazing, they are getting sealed in the temple this July and I am SO excited for them!! I made sure to bring him the biggest bag of gummy bears I could find to our last lesson, he was pretty excited by that.
Yesterday at church 3 different American families were visiting! They came by on a cruise ship. I was able to translate the talks in sacrament meeting for them which was awesome!
Last week in the area book I found a sheet for a couple called John and Vera. I wanted to go visit them, and when I found out Vera’s husband had died recently I wanted to go even more. We went on Saturday, we had to ask around a little but we found the house! It’s sad, Vera is paralyzed so she has to sit in a bed all day. She also had to get her breasts removed because of cancer. She was so happy to see us, we sang a bunch of hymns for her and she cried and said she really felt God’s love. She kept saying, “Merci Seigneur!”. When we got there it was like her and her kids were expecting us. Then Vera told us later that the Spirit had told her that day that somebody would be coming to visit her. She didn’t know who, but she knew someone would come. Her kids didn’t believe her but then we showed up! I’m glad the Spirit was able to lead us to her and help somebody in need!
Funny Moments:
It was raining like crazy on Monday and when I was running across the street my sandal slipped off. So I had to run back in front of an oncoming car and grab it, and then hopped back on one foot until I got out of the road and could put my shoe back on. The driver in the car was laughing but I can’t say I blame her!
Tuesday when we were contacting we passed by a house where a man was giving someone a tattoo in their front yard. Casual.
My mom sent me Cheez-Its (woohoo!!!) and I got Soeur Maitere to try some. That was the first time she had ever eaten it in her life, so happy I could bless her life in that way. [Note from mom: she asked me to send it to her, I would never take this initiative on my own. Not my favorite snack, to put it mildly :)]
I gave Tevai and her friends Sour Patch Kids, but I warned them it was sour. Tevai said, completely serious, “It is amère, that’s why it’s called American candy!” hahah
I had a dream President told me I was finishing the rest of my mission in New Zealand and I was so mad. Luckily I am staying here hahaha

Ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhh questa settimana è stata seriamente LA MIGLIORE della mia intera missione finora! Ogni giorno è stato davvero incredibile e sono tornata a casa sentendomi al settimo cielo. Il nostro capodistretto ci ha sfidato a ottenere o gli Standard di Eccellenza (3 battesimi fissati, 6 simpatizzanti in chiesa, 3 nuovi simpatizzanti) per una settimana oppure le Tabelle d'Onore (2 su 3 delle categorie citate sopra) per due settimane, così io e Sorella Maitere abbiamo lavorato veramente duro per raggiungere questi obiettivi! Abbiamo trovato CINQUE nuovi simpatizzanti questa settimana, evviva! Uno era un riferimento da un membro, uno era un riferimento missionario, uno era dai nostri contatti e due dai nostri ricontatti! Questa è stata la prima volta in cui mi sono davvero sforzata di ottenere un certo numero di simpatizzanti in una settimana ed è stato incredibile! È stato divertente cercare di trovare le persone che il Signore ci ha preparato. E Tevai dice che vuole essere battezzata, così ora abbiamo fissato due battesimi! In questo modo siamo andate molto vicine a raggiungere gli Standard questa settimana! Abbiamo comunque ottenuto le Tabelle d'Onore, ma vogliamo vedere se riusciamo a raggiungere gli Standard questa settimana! Abbiamo undici battesimi potenziali, ma tutti sembrano avere qualche tipo di impedimento che non riusciamo a superare. Con alcune persone mi sembra di avere provato di tutto, ma non mollerò!
Questa settimana è stata la migliore anche perché io e Sorella Maitere abbiamo incontrato e cominciato ad insegnare ad alcune persone davvero fantastiche! Sono proprio degli esempi incredibili di fede per me, anche se alcuni sono nuovi simpatizzanti. Sanno riconoscere così facilmente la mano di Dio nella loro vita e sanno già cosa vogliono fare per cambiare e come arrivarci. Non hanno bisogno di nessuno che li spinga o dica loro cosa fare il che è splendido! Sono così fiera di loro e del loro esempio! Ricordo che la prima cosa che mi è stata detta nella benedizione con cui sono stata messa a parte come missionaria è stata "Incontrerai persone incredibili". Così vero!
La settimana scorsa a Huahine:
Abbiamo cominciato ad insegnare alla sorella del nostro dirigente del lavoro missionario questa settimana! Quando ho scoperto che non era un membro sono rimasta STUPEFATTA perché viene in chiesa ogni settimana. A quanto pare viene in chiesa dal 1999?! Sono contenta che abbia deciso di prendere le lezioni ora, il nostro primo incontro con lei è stato davvero fantastico e c'era uno spirito molto speciale lì!
Questa settimana mi sono prefissa l'obiettivo di studiare di più il taitiano, da quando sono arrivata sul campo missionario ho studiato principalmente il francese nei giorni in cui ho tempo di studiare le lingue. Amo studiare la grammatica francese e la nomenclatura perché hanno un senso per me. Non tanto il taitiano. Quando dò un'occhiata al libro di grammatica nel giro di 5 minuti mi viene l'istinto di buttare il libro fuori dalla finestra per la frustrazione. Ma poi mi ricordo come prima della missione imparare a guidare con il cambio manuale mi sembrava impossibile e ora lo faccio ogni giorno senza problemi. All'inizio della mia missione parlare francese sembrava impossibile e non credevo che sarei mai riuscita a esprimermi come volevo. Ma ora ho fatto tanti progressi in così poco tempo! Il mio obiettivo è di parlare taitiano come parlo il francese, non so se accadrà mai ma il minimo che posso fare è provare. Niente è impossibile quando si ha un Dio onnipotente al proprio fianco!
La nostra piccola classe di inglese sta crescendo e sono così emozionata! Due persone nuove sono venute questa settimana e altre due hanno detto che vogliono venirci la prossima! Ho fatto anche dei poster e li ho appesi in giro in città per pubblicizzarla di più. Abbiamo un sacco di non membri che vi partecipano!
Io e Sorella Maitere abbiamo fatto un sacco di atti di servizio questa settimana ed è stato molto divertente! Abbiamo dato da bere a degli operai e a dei meccanici e anche agli uomini che curano il nostro giardino, e sono stati molto contenti perché faceva molto caldo quel giorno. La casa di uno dei nostri simpatizzanti ha subito un'alluvione per via della pioggia torrenziale di questa settimana così siamo andate a dare una mano a pulire! Abbiamo portato per loro anche una busta gigantesca di cibo. La nostra simpatizzante ha dovuto trattenere le lacrime quando gliel'abbiamo data, è stato così dolce! Ti fa sentire bene poter aiutare le persone che ami!
Questa settimana ho contattato le persone porta a porta per la prima volta, ci sono state volte in cui avevamo programmato di farlo in passato ma succedeva sempre qualche cosa o non avevamo tempo di farlo. Abbiamo incontrato una signora Avventista molto gentile e ora ogni volta che ci vede ci saluta! Abbiamo cantato inni in ogni casa in cui siamo entrate, amo la musica! Porta lo Spirito così velocemente.
Venerdì sera siamo anche andate a parlare alle persone in città. Abbiamo visto un uomo seduto da solo, ho sentito che dovevamo andare a parlare con lui così gli abbiamo portato dell'ananas e ci siamo avvicinate per salutarlo. Penso che lo abbia apprezzato poiché sembrava alquanto solitario, vive da solo qui e stava aspettando un taxi che lo riportasse nella sua casa vuota. Abbiamo avuto una bella conversazione e gli ho detto che lui è figlio di un Padre Celeste che l'ama moltissimo! Ha detto che ci ha visto andare in giro a parlare con la gente e ha detto "È buono quello che fate. Questo è ciò che Cristo ha fatto-lui non stava semplicemente in cappella la domenica, era dappertutto". AMO il fatto che il nostro lavoro come missionari è proprio di parlare con tutti! S'incontrano delle persone meravigliose e si hanno delle grandi conversazioni! Amo farmi dei nuovi amici! Fortunatamente qui le persone sono super gentili e aperte il che ci rende la vita facile. Siamo abituate troppo bene, lo so ;)
Venerdì sera, quando eravamo in città, abbiamo anche distribuito in giro cioccolatini con la macadamia. C'era un gruppo molto folto di persone che pescava con la lenza così siamo andate a parlare con loro (in francese la parola pecheur significa peccatore e anche pescatore, così abbiamo fatto tante battute in merito ahahah). Ho potuto anche arrotolare la lenza e buttarla in acqua, è stato così divertente!! I peuchers erano super simpatici e ci siamo divertite con loro! Inoltre ora so come usare la canna da lenza per pescare, il che è un punto a favore.
Quando stavamo contattando le persone abbiamo incontrato un uomo che si chiama Mahare che fa a mano i costumi per le danze tradizionali taitiane di Haeva!! Era pazzesco! Tesse le gonne e fa anche i copricapo! Era così forte da vedere!
Sabato il nostro padrone di casa e sua moglie ci hanno portate a pranzo allo Huahine Yacht Club! Sono gentilissimi!!
Mercoledì ho fatto l'ultima lezione con Hoarai. È stato triste per me perché gli ho insegnato ogni settimana in questi ultimi quattro mesi! Ma sono così fiera di lui, è un così bravo ragazzo e ci sono cose meravigliose in serbo per lui nel futuro. È stato un privilegio e una gioia averlo potuto conoscere, insegnargli e vederlo progredire e di averlo come mio primo battesimo! La sua famiglia è fantastica, si suggelleranno tutti nel tempio questo luglio e sono COSÌ emozionata per loro!! Ho fatto in modo di portargli alla nostra ultima lezione la più grossa busta di caramelle gommose a forma di orsetto che ho potuto trovare, è stato molto contento.
Ieri in chiesa c'erano in visita 3 famiglie americane diverse! Sono venute in crociera! Ho potuto tradurre i discorsi della sacramentale per loro il che è stato fortissimo!
La settimana scorsa nel libro della zona ho trovato il foglio di una coppia che si chiama John e Vera. Volevo andarli a trovare e quando ho saputo che il marito di Vera era morto di recente sono voluta andarci ancora di più. Ci siamo andate sabato, abbiamo dovuto chiedere in giro ma abbiamo trovato la casa! È triste, Vera è paralizzata così deve stare seduta a letto tutto il giorno. Le hanno anche tolto entrambi i seni a causa del cancro. È stata così felice di vederci, abbiamo cantato diversi inni per lei ed ha pianto e ha detto che ha sentito davvero l'amore di Dio. Continuava a dire, "Merci Seigneur!" (Grazie, Signore!) Quando siamo arrivate era come se lei e i suoi figli ci stessero aspettando. In seguito Vera ci ha detto che lo Spirito le aveva detto che qualcuno sarebbe andato a trovarla. Non sapeva chi, ma sapeva che qualcuno sarebbe andato. I suoi figli non le avevano creduto ma poi siamo arrivate noi! Sono grata che lo Spirito ci abbia potuto condurre a lei e che ci abbia permesso di aiutare qualcuno nel bisogno!
Situazioni da ridere:
Stava piovendo alla grande lunedì e mentre stavo attraversando la strada di corsa mi è scivolato un sandalo dal piede. Così sono dovuta tornare indietro di corsa di fronte ad una macchina che stava per arrivare per prenderlo e poi tornare indietro saltellando su un piede solo finché mi sono tolta dalla strada e ho potuto rimettermi la scarpa. La conducente della macchina si è messa a ridere ma non posso dire che la biasimo!
Martedì, mentre stavamo contattando le persone, siamo passate vicino ad una casa dove un uomo stava facendo un tatuaggio a qualcuno nella parte antistante del giardino. Tranquillo.
Mia madre mi ha mandato i Cheez-Its (Evviva!) e ne ho fatti assaggiare alcuni a Sorella Maitere. Questa è stata la prima volta che li ha mangiati, sono così felice di aver potuto benedire la sua vita in questo modo. [Nota della mamma: in realtà mi aveva chiesto lei di mandarli, non sono tra gli snack che ritengo commestibili:)]
Ho dato a Tevai e alle sue amiche i Sour Patch Kids (sono caramelle acri) ma le ho avvertite che erano acri. Tevai ha detto, del tutto seria," Sono amare, questo è perché si chiamano caramelle americane!" ahah
Ho sognato che il Presidente mi diceva che dovevo finire la mia missione in Nuova Zelanda ed ero così arrabbiata. Fortunatamente rimarrò qui ahahah
