Weekly Email 20: Cow Heart and Baby Sharks

Happy New Year everyone! I can’t believe it’s 2018!! My sense of time has gotten so messed up, I still think August was not that long ago and then I realize it was 5 months ago!! It’s hard to keep track of time in a place where the seasons never change.

Well in this mission we have to go to bed at 10 (we wake up at 6), so for the first time in years I couldn’t watch the ball drop and be up at midnight for the new year. Oh well, pas grave. Everyone on this island has been getting drunk since Christmas Eve to celebrate the holidays, so they can get wild for us. Me and Soeur Hemsley got invited to a barbecue on the beach with some members on New Year’s Eve! We watched the sun set and it was super gorgeous! Then at night we saw some baby sharks in the water! I also ate cow heart, I totally thought it was normal meat until Soeur Hemsley told me, I didn’t believe her at first. It was chewy but pretty good.

This past week on Huahine:

Christmas! I got to Skype with my family, we only got 45 minutes so it went by pretty fast, but it was still good! It felt so nice to be able to speak Italian again :’) Me and Soeur Hemsley did our typical p day stuff but it was still a good day! Glad I could spend it with my Huahine family and companion! I didn’t even feel homesick, probably because it didn’t feel like Christmas at all haha Holidays on the mission are kinda lame, but you still celebrate as much as you can! Something funny about here, barely anyone puts up Christmas lights but a lot of people put balloons up on Christmas day. Birthday party for Christ!
ZOMBIE CAT PART 2: So some stupid dog decided to dig up the cat corpse, rip the body in half, and leave the bigger half on the concrete walkway under our window. Thanks, what a great Christmas present! The heat kind of melted the corpse into the cement a little and me and Soeur Hemsley had to scrape it off with a tool thing we had and re-bury it. I cannot describe in words the disgusting smell and sight of a six day old decomposing corpse. I hope I never in my life have to deal with something like that again!!!!!! A dog decided to dig it up AGAIN a few days later, but luckily it was just bones at that point.
We’ve been meeting every day this week with Thomas and Lara, the two amis visiting from Arue. They are so awesome, they’re leaving Tuesday morning and I’m so sad! Thomas has a pretty strong drug addiction he’s been dealing with for years, so we’ve been trying to help him overcome that by relying on the Savior and His Atonement. I told Thomas I’ll be at his baptism some day, whenever it will be. I really hope I can actually be there! Me and Soeur Hemsley have had such a fun time with them, I'm glad we got to teach them, even for a little while!
This week we had a lesson with Mary and Taylor about how we can strengthen our homes and make it a loving and happy place, since the parents wanted to postpone the baptism since they said they’re being too disrespectful. The parents sat in for the lesson, which they’ve never done before. While we were there I had the idea of showing them a picture of a family, and talking about how families are a blessing God gives us because He loves us. Then I had the idea to show a picture of my family, and I talked about how having the Gospel has helped us so much. I showed a picture of the Pape’ete temple and then pictures from my sister’s wedding and talked about how we can be with our families FOREVER, thanks to temple ordinances. Our goal is to be with our families for all eternity, but the first step starts in our earthly home. The home is just as sacred as the temple. Normally the kids can get off track and won’t sit still, but as I was talking they payed full attention. The parents were paying close attention to, and thanked me when I was done talking. None of what I did was planned beforehand, but it all went so smoothly and I knew so clearly what to do. I know the Spirit was guiding me, by placing thoughts in my head and putting words in my mouth. There was definitely a special spirit there. The parents' block for baptism was marriage, so that’s why they stopped the lessons (a lot of people here live together for years and have 5 kids etc but never get married). I know my lesson touched them, and I'm grateful now that the baptism could be postponed so we could have this lesson. God has a plan!
On Thursday our lesson fell through, and also our backup then fell through, and then the backup to our backup! gaahh!!! But I truly believe that when plans fall through it’s just because God has a different plan. So instead of getting mad I just think “Ok Heavenly Father, what would you have us do today?”. Me and Soeur Hemlsey went through the area book and found 13 people we want to recontact!
Everything is going well with our other amis, we’re so close to getting permission for some of the children!!! Fingers crossed!!! I want to be able to be at their baptisms, so it has to happen before I leave!
This week our ward had a 3 day outing at the beach. Me and Soeur Hemsley just went on Friday for ma’a Tahiti! aka traditional Tahitian food like uru, ipo, taro, po’e etc. Super good! The beach was BEAUTIFUL. To your back you had the green mountains and palm trees, and to your front was the ocean, which is always a killer view. The water is clear enough to be in a swimming pool and a million different shades of blue, some so bright you didn’t think it was possible. And in the near distance you can see the islands of Tahaa and Raiatea! Missionaries can’t swim and it takes all of my self control not to jump in that water!! It’s torture to see everyone else swimming!!

Funny moments:

I gave Lucy and her friends some quarters and they got SO excited to have American money. You’d think I’d have given them gold by the way they reacted. It was so cute!
Sometimes when Soeur Hemsley and I go running in the morning there’s this crazy old guy who sits on the side of the road and always yells out “ÇA VA?” and then leaves. One day he told Soeur Hemsley that after her mission they can get married and go fishing together hahaha
Thomas asked me to read him a scripture in English and then he said I have an accent?? Apparently my accent isn’t “pure American”, whatever that means.
Someone here asked me AGAIN if I wear colored contacts. NO, MY EYES ARE REAL! I PROMISE! There are other eye colors besides brown!
Today someone gave me this advice: “Stay single forever”. I’ll make that my New Year’s resolution, thank you.
Here people saran wrap everything to death because they don’t use Tupper Ware. At the grocery store they sell boxes with 2000 feet of saran wrap, I didn’t even know that existed!

Last week I read Alma chapters 26-29 in the Book of Mormon, which is, as people here would describe it, POWER!! It just sums up so perfectly the joy of missionary work. I’m so excited for 2018 because I will spend this entire year as a missionary in French Polynesia!!! Yay!!!! Bring it on!

Today is our busiest p-day ever so I don’t have a lot of time to write. I might be able to come back later and write but I don't know. We have two fatamaaraas (meals with members), one at lunch and one for dinner, and the one tonight is FHE (Family Home Evening) so we have to do the lesson! And we have our last lesson with Thomas today too and this morning we had to deep clean the house which took extra time! so sorry If I don’t get to you today! love you guys thanks SO much for the emails and all the love!

Buon Anno a tutti! Non ci posso credere che sia già il 2018!! Il mio senso del tempo è completamente falsato, penso ancora che agosto non sia tanto lontano ma poi mi rendo che sono passati 5 mesi!! È difficile tener conto del tempo in un posto in cui le stagioni non cambiano mai.

Allora in questa missione dobbiamo andare a dormire alle 10 (ci svegliamo alle 6), così per la prima volta non ho potuto vedere la Ball Drop in televisione a fine anno a Times Square e stare alzata fino a mezzanotte per vedere il nuovo anno. Oh, va bene, non è un problema. Tutti su quest'isola si ubriacano dalla vigilia di natale per celebrare le feste, così sono troppo sfrenati per noi. Ia e Sorella Hemsley siamo state invitate ad un barbecue sulla spiaggia da alcuni membri per il fine dell'anno! Abbiamo visto il tramonto ed è stato bellissimo! Poi di sera abbiamo visto alcuni cuccioli di squali nell'acqua! Ho anche mangiato il cuore di una mucca, pensavo che si trattasse di carne normale finché Sorella Hemsley non me l'ha detto, ma non le ho creduto subito. Era un po' gommoso ma buono.

La scorsa settimana a Huahine:

Natale! Ho potuto parlare con la mia famiglia su Skype, potevamo farlo solo per 45 minuti così è andato via velocemente, ma è stato bello comunque! Era così bello poter parlare di nuovo italiano :') Io e Sorella Hemsley abbiamo fatto le solite cose che facciamo durante il p-day ma è stata comunque una bella giornata! Sono felice che abbia potuto trascorrerlo con la mia famiglia di Huahine e con la mia collega! Non mi è neanche mancata la mia famiglia, probabilmente perché non sembra neanche natale ahah! Le feste in missione sono alquanto noiose, ma si cerca di festeggiare per quello che si può! Una cosa buffa qui è che quasi nessuno mette su le luci di natale ma un sacco di persone mettono i palloncini il giorno di natale. Festa di compleano per Gesù!
GATTO ZOMBIE PARTE 2: Allora qualche stupido cane ha deciso di disotterrare il corpo del gatto, tranciare il corpo a metà e di lasciare la parte più grossa sul vialetto di cemento sotto la nostra finestra. Grazie, che bel regalo di natale! Il caldo ha sciolto un po' il corpo sul cemento ed io e sorella Hemsley abbiamo dovuto grattarlo via con un aggeggio e poi riseppellirlo. Non posso descrivere adeguatamente l'odore disgustoso e la vista orrenda di un corpo in decomposizione da sei giorni. Spero di non dover avere a che fare con una cosa del genere mai più in vita mia!!! Un cane ha deciso di disotterrarlo DI NUOVO alcuni giorni dopo ma fortunatamente a quel punto si trattava solo di ossa.
Ci siamo incontrate ogni giorno questa settimana con Thomas e Lara, i due simpatizzanti in visita da Arue. Sono così in gamba, partono martedì mattina e sono così triste! Thomas ha avuto una forte forma di tossicodipendenza da anni così abbiamo cercato di aiutarlo a superarla facendo riferimento al Salvatore e alla sua Espiazione. Ho detto a Thomas che andrò al suo battesimo un giorno, quale che sia il giorno in cui avverrà. Davvero spero di poterci essere veramente! Io e Sorella Hemsley abbiamo passato dei bei momenti con loro. Sono grata di aver potuto insegnare loro, anche se per poco tempo!
Questa settimana abbiamo fatto una lezione a Mary e a Taylor su come possiamo rafforzare la nostra casa e renderla un luogo piacevole e felice, dal momento in cui i suoi genitori hanno voluto posticipare il loro battesimo in quanto erano troppo irrispettose a casa. I genitori si sono seduti con noi durante la lezione, cosa che non hanno mai fatto prima. Mentre eravamo lì ho avuto l'idea di mostrar loro la foto di una famiglia e di parlare di come le famiglie siano una benedizione che Dio ci dà perché ci ama. Poi mi è venuta l'idea di mostare una foto della mia famiglia e ho parlato di come avere il Vangelo ci abbia aiutato tanto. Ho mostrato una foto del tempio di Pape'ete e poi alcune foto del matrimonio di mia sorella e ho parlato di come possiamo stare con le nostre famiglie PER SEMPRE, grazie alle ordinanze del tempio. Il nostro obiettivo è di stare con le nostre famiglie per l'eternità ma i primi passi cominciano nelle nostre case terrene. La casa è sacra quanto il tempio. Solitamente i bambini si distraggono e non stanno seduti composti ma mentre parlavo avevo la loro completa attenzione. Anche i genitori prestavano molta attenzione e mi hanno ringraziato quando ho finito di parlare. Niente di ciò che ho fatto era stato preparato in anticipo, ma tutto è andato a perfezione e sapevo esattamente cosa dovevo fare. Io so che lo Spirito mi stava guidando mettendo pensieri nella mia mente e parole nella mia bocca. C'era di sicuro uno spirito speciale lì. L'impedimento per i genitori era il matrimonio, perciò hanno interrotto le lezioni (un sacco di persone qui vivono insieme per anni e hanno 5 figli senza mai sposarsi). So che la mia lezione li ha toccati e sono grata ora che il battesimo sia stato posposto così che abbiamo potuto fare questa lezione. Dio ha un piano!
Giovedì la nostra lezione è venuta meno e anche l'altra di riserva e poi la riserva della riserva! AAAAH!!!! Ma credo davvero che quando i piani vengono meno è solo perché Dio ne ha uno diverso. Così invece di arrabbiarmi penso solo " Va bene, Padre Celeste, cosa vorresti che io faccia oggi?" Io e Sorella Hemsley abbiamo rivisto il libro della zona e abbiamo trovato 13 persone da ricontattare!
Tutto sta procedendo bene con gli altri nostri simpatizzanti, siamo così vicini ad ottenere i permessi per alcuni dei bambini! Dita incrociate!!!! Voglio poter essere presente ai loro battesimi, così devono essere prima che io me ne vada!
La scorsa settimana il nostro rione ha fatto una gita di 3 giorni sulla spiaggia. Io e Sorella Hemsley siamo andate solo venerdì per ma'a Tahiti! Vuol dire cibo tradizionale taitiano come uru, ipo, taro, po'e ecc. Buonissimo! La spiaggia era BELLISSIMA. Alle spalle avevamo le montagne verdi e gli alberi di palma e di fronte l'oceano, che è sempre una visione mozzafiato. L'acqua è chiara come quella di una piscina e ha milioni di gradazioni diverse di blu, alcune così chiare che uno neanche immagina possano esistere. E nelle immediate vicinanze si possono vedere l'isola di Tahaa e Raiatea! I missionari non hanno il permesso di andare a nuotare e ci vuole tutta la mia autodisciplina per non saltare nell'acqua! È una tortura vedere tutti gli altri che nuotano!!

Situazioni da ridere:

Ho dato a Lucy e alle sue amiche delle monete da 25 centesimi e sono state COSÌ contente di avere delle monete americane. Uno penserebbe che avessi regalato loro dell'oro per come hanno reagito. Era così simpatico a vedersi!
A volte quando io e sorella Hemsley andiamo a correre la mattina c'è questo strano uomo anziano che siede sul bordo della strada e grida sempre “ÇA VA?” (Come va?) e poi se ne va. Un giorno ha detto a Sorella Hemsley che dopo la sua missione si possono sposare e andare a pescare insieme ahahah
Thomas mi ha chiesto di leggergli una scrittura in inglese e poi mi ha detto che ho un accento?? A quanto pare il mio accento non è "puro Americano", per quel che significa.
Qualcuno mi ha chiesto DI NUOVO se porto le lenti a contatto colorate. NO, I MIEI OCCHI SONO VERI, LO PROMETTO! Ci sono anche altri colori per gli occhi a parte il marrone!
Oggi qualcuno mi ha dato questo consiglio: "Rimani nubile per sempre". Lo prenderò come proponimento per quest'anno nuovo, grazie.
Qui le persone usano la pellicola per tutto perché non usano le scatole di plastica per alimenti. Al supermercato vendono rotoli di pellicola da 600 metri, non sapevo neanche che esistessero!

La settimana scorsa ho letto i capitoli 26-29 di Alma nel Libro di Mormon, che, per dirla con le parole che usano qui, sono POTERE!! Riassumono perfettamente la gioia del lavoro missionario. Sono molto emozionata per il 2018 perché trascorrerò l'anno intero come missionaria nella Polinesia Francese!!!! Evviva! Dacci sotto!

Oggi è il nostro p-day più pieno di impegni così non ho molto tempo per scrivere. Potrei tornare più tardi e continuare a scrivere ma non ne sono sicura. Abbiamo due fatamaaraas (pasti con i membri), uno a pranzo e uno a cena e quello di stasera è per una Serata Familiare così faremo noi la lezione! E abbiamo anche la nostra ultima lezione con Thomas oggi mentre stamattina abbiamo dovuto fare le grandi pulizie a casa il che richiede più tempo! Mi dispiace molto se non riuscirò a scrivervi personalmente oggi! Vi voglio tanto bene, grazie TANTE per gli email e per tutto l'amore!
