Weekly Email 19: Zombie Cat

Merry Christmas everyone! Joyeux Noël! I hope everyone has a really awesome day!

So this week me and Soeur Hemsley had a traumatizing experience! We have around 6 stray cats that like to hang out at our house. Well Thursday I was putting my clothes in the washing machine when I looked at the backyard and saw one of their bodies! I think a dog got it, there was a wound in its side and its head was chomped up and you could see it’s brain (ew). It had been dead a few days, me and Soeur Hemsley didn’t discover it right away because we were in Raiatea. So yeah that was super gross, I’ve never had to deal with a dead body in my yard before so we didn’t know what to do. Plus our landlord is gone and he’s the one who always does our yard work and probably would’ve gotten rid of it for us. Soeur Hemsley asked me « Do you think we can dig a hole with our steak knife? ». I said absolutely not. So in the end we decided to go to Bishop’s house and ask if we could borrow a shovel to bury it. Luckily Bishop’s wife asked their son to come help us, so he buried it for us. That was our first time meeting him, what a great first encounter haha but then two days later I look out the window and SOMETHING DUG UP THE BODY. The now half-decomposed body was laying there next to an empty hole. I was so disturbed!!!! Then the next day I wake up and the body is gone! Then I realize it’s not gone, it somehow moved to under our window!! And it’s so decayed at this point, it’s so gross!!!! We were too busy that day to take care of it, so we’ll have to do that today….SOS. It’s like a horror movie! There really never is a dull moment here, but this is something I’d rather not have to deal with…

This past week on Huahine:

As predicted, everyone has been leaving for the holidays and everyone who is still here has asked to cancel all lessons until after the New Year. So that’s been really annoying, but the lessons we did have went well! When one of our lessons fell through we decided to surprise an ami we haven’t seen in a while with some cake, she was really happy! Sometimes when things fall through it’s just because God has an alternate plan! We also got to meet with an ami from Arue (on Tahiti) who’s here on Huahine with his family for the holidays! He is super super awesome, he’s had a tough life but the gospel is helping him so much! Sadly Mary and Taylor will not be getting baptized this Saturday anymore. :( Their parents are still ok with it, but they want to postpone the baptism because they said the kids are nice to us but too disrespectful at home. So that’s too bad, we’ve talked to them about that already but now we’re going to crack down. I think we’ll still be able to get them baptized in January, as long as they improve their behavior.
This week we had a missionary Christmas party for our zone!! On Tahiti they had a party for all the missionaries there, but we obviously can’t go to that so we had our own. Soeur Hemsley and I got to fly to Raiatea again! We went Wednesday night and got to sleep over with the sisters in Faaroa and Avera (Soeur Nicholls, Soeur Sellers, Soeur Luka, and Soeur Doumulin-Morphis). They live all together in this super cute two-story pink house that has a balcony! Our party was on Thursday from 8-3:30. We played games together and then watched a movie before lunch. The options were Cars 3, Beauty and the Beast, and Moana. Moana won, there were some missionaries here who still haven’t seen it because it came out during their mission. After eating we did a White Elephant swap! We couldn’t spend more than five dollars on the presents so there were some interesting ones. Also some super ghetto wrapping jobs hahaha Me and Soeur Hemsley got our presents at Super U, the only grocery store on Huahine. We got a super sketchy Santa face with a hole in the cheek and a weird beard that has one super long strand that goes to the floor. Then we bought a stick with a Santa head that’s supposed to light up and sing a song but it doesn’t because it’s half broken and falling apart. I was laughing so hard when I found them at the store, they’re the most ghetto toys ever. Elder Ward got the sketchy Santa face and he hung it up on him and Elder Brown’s front door! I was so happy, it’s probably going to scare everyone away but pas grave! After that we played some more games until it was time for me and Soeur Hemsley to go to the airport. The trip went by way too fast but it was super fun!! I love my zone! It’s too bad we can’t all get together more, but we all serve on different islands. We got zone t-shirts made though and they came out well!
This week the ward at Fare also had their Christmas party! All the woman were wearing red and white traditional Tahitian dresses with flower crowns. So pretty! We ate tons of food.

Funny moments:

So trying to find the house of the ami from Arue was an ordeal because no one here has addresses. You just have to know where people live. They told us their house was five houses down from the Adventist chapel, with a Toyota in the driveway. It’s actually five houses before the chapel, not after, so it took us forever to find it with lots of looping around and confused phone calls. But we did it! I really miss having a GPS!
Me and Soeur Hemsley had a lesson with a guy who swears a lot, but he tries not to in front of us. I was reading a scripture and mispronounced the word « coeur » and accidentally said a swear. Whoops! I didn’t even realize it until the ami was like woah woah woah do you know what you just said?
An older woman lives with the sisters on Raiatea called Mami Salome. SHE IS SO FUNNY. She is the most quotable person ever. She reminds me so much of my aunt Giuliana!
Me and Soeur Hemsley had a very entertaining conversation with Lucy, our 11 year old ami, and her friends. They asked us if there were monsters in America hahaha They are very fascinated with the United States, and I told them most people there want to come to where they live. Then I told Taina I live near New York and she was like « I heard in New York they make pizzas 2 meters wide! ». I told them I’d bring them some American coins next week and they got SO excited. It was really funny. Taina asked if could give her my mascara and I said no. Then they asked if I had seen any celebrities, I said I’d been to an Ariana Grande concert and they freaked out. Lucy asked me if I had a face and I was super confused and then I realized she meant facebook. I showed them my photo book and when they saw some of my prom pictures they were like « WOW you look like a MODEL!!! ». Then when they saw a picture of me and my prom date they were like « Is that your husband???? » hahaha I love talking to kids, it’s so entertaining.
I have some pajama bottoms that I bought in the US, that have random words written on them in different languages about the ocean. I never actually read it until yesterday, and it turns out the only languages on it are Tahitian, French, Italian, and English! What a crazy coincidence!!!
I’ve been getting some pretty sweet tan lines here, I have a short sleeve tan, flip flip tan, watch tan, and v-neck tan! woohoo

Sunday in Haapu we couldn’t teach any of our amis because they’re all gone. So instead we went and visited some people with Papu, the DMP (missionary leader) there. But like I said, when things don’t work out it’s just because God has an alternate plan! We visited an old man first, he’s sick and needs a breathing tube :( We just talked about Jesus Christ and his birth and then sang Silent Night for him in French and Tahitian. At the end I gave him a pass along card with a message I had written on the back! He was so touched that me and my companion have come from so far while we’re so young to do God’s work. He was so happy too that we had come to visit him! We visited an elderly couple after him and did the same thing. They were so touched too and also said that they were really impressed and grateful that we’d leave America to come to their little island and visit with them! It felt so good to be able to meet with them and help them remember they are so loved, by us and their Heavenly Father! I remember when I found out Elders weren’t coming to Haapu this transfer and I was so devastated. But I know that there’s still work for us to do there and experiences like these that I need to have. Also hanging out with Papu and the Haapu crew is so fun, I love them! I’m happy to have more time with them, I wouldn’t want it any other way! Coming back to Huahine from Raiatea feels like going back home. That’s what Huahine is to me- home! I love it here so so much, but I think you guys already know that because I say it every week ;)

Buon Natale a tutti! Joyeux Noël! Spero che tutti abbiate trascorso un giorno meraviglioso!

Allora la settimana scorsa io e Sorella Hemsley abbiamo avuto un'esperienza traumatizzante. Abbiamo sei gatti randagi a cui piace soggiornare fuori casa nostra. Ebbene giovedì, mentre mettevo i vestiti nella lavatrice ho guardato fuori nel retro del giardino e ho visto uno dei loro corpi! Penso che l'avesse attaccato un cane, aveva una ferita sul lato del corpo e la testa era morsicata e si poteva vedere il cervello (che schifo). Era morto da qualche giorno, io e Sorella Hemsley non ce ne siamo accorte prima perché eravamo a Raiatea. Così sì, era proprio molto schifoso, non avevo mai avuto a che fare con un corpo morto nel giardino prima d'allora così non sapevamo cosa fare. Inoltre il nostro padrone di casa non c'era ed è lui che si cura dei lavori in giardino e probabilmente ci avrebbe pensato lui. Sorella Hemsley mi ha chiesto: "Pensi che potremmo scavare una fossa con il coltello da bistecca?" Le ho risposto assolutamente di no. Così alla fine abbiamo deciso di andare a casa del vescovo e di chiedergli se potevamo prendere in prestito una pala per seppellirlo. Fortunatamente la moglie del vescovo ha chiesto a suo figlio di venirci ad aiutare, così l'ha seppellito lui per noi. Quella è stata la prima volta che l'abbiamo visto, che bel primo incontro ahah, ma poi due giorni dopo ho guardato fuori dalla finestra e QUALCOSA AVEVA DISOTTERRATO IL CORPO. Il corpo mezzo decomposto ora giaceva vicino alla fossa vuota. Mi sono talmente inorridita!!!!! Poi il giorno dopo mi sono svegliata e il corpo non c'era più! Mi sono accorta dopo che non era sparito, in qualche modo era stato spostato sotto la nostra finestra!! Ed era ormai così decomposto, che schifo!!! Avevamo troppo da fare quel giorno per poter fare qualcosa così dovremo pensarci oggi....SOS. È come un film dell'orrore! Non ci si annoia mai qui ma farei volentieri a meno di questa cosa....

La settimana scorsa a Huahine:

Come previsto tutti stanno partendo per le vacanze e quelli che sono rimasti ancora qui hanno chiesto di cancellare tutte le lezioni fino a dopo l'arrivo dell'anno nuovo. È davvero scocciante questa cosa ma le lezioni che abbiamo avuto sono andate molto bene! Dopo che una delle nostre lezioni è stata cancellata abbiamo deciso di fare una sopresa a una nostra simpatizzante che non vedevamo da un po' di tempo portandole una torta, è stata molto contenta! A volte quando le cose non vanno come previsto è solo perché Dio ha in serbo qualche altra cosa! Abbiamo anche potuto vedere un altro simpatizzante di Arue (a Tahiti) che è qui a Huahine con la famiglia per le feste! È fortissimo, ha avuto una vita difficile ma il vangelo lo sta aiutando tanto! Putroppo Mary e Taylor non si battezzeranno più questo sabato:( I loro genitori sono ancora d'accordo ma vogliono posticipare il battesimo perché dicono che le loro figlie sono gentili con noi ma mancano troppo di rispetto a casa. Non è buono questo, abbiamo già parlato con loro a riguardo ma ora dobbiamo andare fino in fondo. Penso che riusciremo a farle battezzare a gennaio, almeno se riescono a migliorare il loro comportamento.
La settimana scorsa abbiamo fatto una festa di natale per i missionari della nostra zona!! A Tahiti hanno fatto una festa per tutti i missionari lì ma ovviamente non potevamo andare a quella così abbiamo fatto quella nostra. Io e Sorella Hemsley abbiamo preso l'aereo per Raiatea di nuovo! Ci siamo andate mercoledì sera e abbiamo dormito con le sorelle di Faaroa e Avera (Sorella Nicholls, Sorella Sellers, Sorella Luka e Sorella Doumilin-Morphis). Abitano tutte insieme in una casa rosa a due piani molto carina che ha il balcone! La nostra festa è stata giovedì dalle 8-3:30. Abbiamo fatto dei giochi e poi abbiamo visto un film insieme prima di pranzo. La scelta era tra Cars 3, La Bella e la Bestia e Oceania. Ha vinto Oceania, c'erano dei missionari che non l'avevano ancora visto perché è uscito mentre erano in missione. Dopo aver mangiato abbiamo fatto uno scambio di regali! Non potevamo spendere più di cinque dollari per i regali così ce n'erano di interessanti. C'è stato anche un lavoro sopraffino di incartamento ahahah. Io e sorella Hemsley abbiamo comprato i nostri regali da Super U, l'unico supermercato di Huahine. Abbiamo comprato una faccia di Babbo Natale di scarsissima qualità con un buco nella guancia e una strana barba che aveva un filo lunghissimo che arrivava fino a terra. Poi abbiamo comprato un bastoncino con la testa di Babbo Natale che avrebbe dovuto accendersi e suonare una canzoncina di natale ma non lo faceva perché era mezza rotta e cadeva a pezzi. Mi sono sbellicata dalle risate quando li ho trovati al negozio, erano i regali più grezzi che abbia mia visto. Anziano Ward ha avuto il losco Babbo Natale e l'ha appeso sulla porta di ingresso sua e di Anziano Brown! Sono stata così felice, probabilmente spaventerà tutti quelli che passano ma non fa niente! Dopo quello abbiamo fatto altri giochi finchè si è fatta ora per me e Sorella Hemsley di andare all'aereporto. La giornata è passata troppo velocemente ma è stata molto divertente!! Amo la mia zona! Peccato che non possiamo vederci più spesso, ma serviamo tutti su isole diverse. Abbiamo avuto le magliette fatte apposta per la nostra zona e sono venute molto bene!
La settimana passata anche il rione di Fare ha fatto la festa di natale! Tutte le donne indossavano i vestiti tradizionali taitiani bianchi e rossi con le corone di fiori. Erano così belli! Abbiamo mangiato un sacco di cibo.

Situazioni da ridere:

Allora trovare la casa del nostro simpatizzante di Arue è stata un'impresa perché nessuno qui ha indirizzi. Bisogna sapere solo dove abitano le persone. Ci hanno detto che casa sua era cinque case dopo la Chiesa Avventista, con una Toyota nel vialetto. In realtà è cinque case prima della cappella, non dopo, così c'è voluto un sacco a trovarla con un mucchio di andirivieni e telefonate confusionarie. Ma l'abbiamo trovata! Mi manca davvero avere un navigatore!
Io e sorella Hemsley abbiamo fatto una lezione a un ragazzo che dice un sacco di parolacce ma si sforza di non farlo di fronte a noi. Stavo leggendo una scrittura e ho pronunciato male la parola "coeur" e ho detto involontariamente una parolaccia. Ohoh! Non me ne sono neanche accorta fino a che lui non ha detto " Oh, ma lo sai quello che hai appena detto?"
Una donna più grande vive con le sorelle a Raiatea e si chiama Mami Salome. È COSÌ DIVERTENTE! È la persona più rinomata. Mi ricorda molto mia zia Giuliana!
Io e Sorella Hemsley abbiamo fatto una conversazione interessante con Lucy, una nostra simpatizzante di 11 anni e con le sue amiche. Ci hanno chiesto se ci fossero mostri in America ahahah. Erano molto affascinate dagli Stati Uniti e ho detto loro che molte persone vorrebbero venire dove vivono loro invece. Poi ho detto a Taina che abito non lontano da New York e lei mi fa "Ho sentito dire che a New York fanno la pizza larga 2 metri!" Ho detto loro che avrei portato delle monete americane la prossima settimana ed erano COSÌ emozionate. È stato proprio divertente. Taina mi ha chiesto se potevo darle il mio mascara e io le ho detto di no. Poi mi hanno chiesto se avessi visto mai delle celebrità e ho detto loro che sono andata a un concerto di Ariana Grande una volta e sono impazzite. Lucy mi ha chiesto se avessi una face (faccia) ed ero molto confusa ma poi ho capito che intendeva facebook. Ho mostrato loro il mio album fotografico e quando hanno visto alcune delle foto del mio prom hanno detto "Oh, sembri una MODELLA!!!!" Quando poi hanno visto una foto mia con il ragazzo che faceva coppia con me al prom mi hanno chiesto "È tuo marito questo????" ahahah, amo parlare con i bambini, è così divertente.
Ho un paio di pantaloni da pigiama che ho comprato negli Stati Uniti, hanno delle parole scritte a caso nella fantasia della stoffa in diverse lingue sul tema dell'oceano. Non le avevo mai lette fino a ieri e guarda un po' le uniche lingue sono taitiano, francese, italiano e inglese! Che coincidenza pazzesca!!!
Mi sto facendo dei bei segni di abbronzatura qui, ho il segno dell'abbronzatura della maglietta a maniche corte, degli infradito, dell'orologio e della scollatura a V! Evviva! :)

Domenica ad Haapu non abbiamo potuto insegnare a nessuno dei nostri simpatizzanti perché erano tutti andati via. Così invece siamo andati a trovare alcune persone con Papu, il dirigente del lavoro missionario. Ma come ho detto, quando le cose non funzionano è perché Dio ha un altro piano! Siamo andati a trovare prima un uomo anziano, è malato e ha bisogno di un tubo per respirare :( Abbiamo solo parlato di Gesù Cristo e della sua nascita e abbiamo cantato Bianco Natal per lui in francese e taitiano. Alla fine gli ho dato una cartolina con un messaggio che avevo scritto sul retro! È rimasto così colpito che io e la mia collega siamo venute da così lontano quando siamo ancora così giovani per fare il lavoro dei Dio. Ed è stato anche così contento che siamo andati a trovarlo! Siamo andati a trovare una coppia anziana dopo di lui e abbiamo fatto la stessa cosa. Anche loro sono rimasti toccati e hanno anche detto che erano molto colpiti e grati che noi avevamo lasciato l'America per venire sulla loro piccola isola per andarli a trovare! Ci ha fatto sentire così bene poterli incontrare e aiutarli a ricordare che sono amati da noi e dal Padre Celeste. Mi ricordo come ero distrutta quando ho saputo che gli Anziani non sarebbero venuti ad Haapu questo trasferimento. Ma so che c'è ancora lavoro per noi da fare lì e di quante esperienze come queste devo ancora fare. Inoltre trascorrere il tempo con Papu e le persone di Haapu è molto divertente. Li amo! Sono felice di poter trascorrere più tempo con loro, non vorrei che fosse in alcun altro modo! Tornare a Huahine da Raiatea è stato come tornare a casa. Questo è quello che Huahine è per me ora-casa! Amo questo posto così tanto, ma penso che voi ormai lo sappiate già perché lo dico ogni settimana ;)
