Weekly Email 18: Cutting Pineapple with Steak Knives

So usually people give us tons and tons of mangos, but lately we’ve been getting pineapple, which is awesome because the pineapple here is soooo good and 100x better than the one in the United States! The only problem is we don’t have anything good to cut it with! All we have in the house is butter knives and two steak knives that are useless. So I had to hack up the pineapple with a huge steak knife, it was a tiring process because the blade is so dull and I felt like a butcher using that knife. It was pretty entertaining. I kinda wish we had a machete so I could’ve tried with that, but oh well! Then that night I was trying to open a can of tomato sauce, but our can opener also doesn’t work. So Soeur Hemsley stabbed the tiny can open with a huge steak knife, it was so funny. Desperate times call for desperate measures!
This past week on Huahine:
TRANSFER CALLS were on Friday night! Good news is, I’m staying on Huahine! I was pretty sure I was staying but you never know, so I was nervous anyways. I’m really happy to be staying, I didn’t want to leave at all! This upcoming transfer will probably be my last one here, so that means I’ll be leaving at the end of January, but I’m very grateful for the opportunity to stay just a little while longer! Sad news, no Elders are coming to Haapu yet :( Soeur Hemsley and I were super disappointed, we wanted Elders to come back so badly! I love Huahine with all my heart, but being so isolated from the other missionaries is really sad sometimes. But as I’ve seen time and time again on my mission, God’s plan is always best. Right now it’s really hard for me to see how not having Elders back is the right plan, but I know I need to swallow any bitterness or sadness I have and just trust in God. It’s harder to have faith when you don’t understand and don’t see the whole picture, but we need to have faith nonetheless. « Thy will be done, O Lord, and not mine ». Barely any of the zone changed, which is super unusual. We have mini transfers here occasionally, which means there’s a transfer in the middle of the transfer. So in 3 weeks on January 8 some people will get moved around. I think some of the zone will change then. But we still also have the regular transfer on January 29, the end of the six week period.
This week me and Soeur Hemsley made brownies to drop off at people’s houses. We found a bunch of boxes of brownie mix at the store. Well we opened one box up and there were COBWEBS in it. Gross! We open up another box and dump it in the bowl, and Soeur Hemsley was like « Ew it’s moving!! ». Turns out there were BUGS in that one….luckily the other boxes were fine. We took the brownies and put a scripture on it, as well as a Light the World pass along card with a message on it from us. Then we dropped it off and gave it to some amis that we haven’t been able to meet with for a while. It was so awesome, they were really touched! I encourage you all to look for small ways to serve people. The world would be a much better place if everyone focused more on how to love and help those around them! One member here told me « We might not have fancy Christmas lights here like they do in the United States, but the light here is in the hearts of the people and in their families». Parau Mau! True! I know we can have that light in our hearts as we look for ways to serve and spread love and happiness!
EXCITING NEWS!!! Mary and Taylor’s parents said yes to baptism so we fixed a date for December 30!! I am so happy and the girls are so happy too! We did a practice baptismal interview with them and they remembered all we’ve taught them so well, I was really impressed! They are so ready! I love them so much, I feel blessed that I’ll be able to see them get baptized. They are only 8 and 9 but are great examples to their whole family! We’re still waiting for parental permission for a lot of our other amis, so I’m hoping that will work out.
Thursday there was an Interfaith Christmas concert for all the Christian denominations in Fare! It was super cool! The Catholics, Evangelicals, Pentacostals and Adventists all performed. And us too, of course! For our church they selected a few kids from Primary to perform, it was so cute! I love all the kids at church so much, hanging out with them is so fun. I love my little friends!
This week our car engine overheated again and me and Soeur Hemsley didn’t know why because we got the fan fixed. So we were just sitting on the mountain, on the road to Aitu’s house, when his dad drives by. He looked under our car hood and figured out what was wrong right away. Apparently there was no water for the engine, whoops. I don’t know how cars work at all so I didn’t know to check for that, no one told us! And the mechanic somehow didn’t notice that when we went. But it’s all good, we figured it out now! You learn so many skills on the mission ;) So hopefully that was the last of our car troubles, the AC in the car is finally working now too! (thank goodness, it was so hot this past week I was melting). But Aitu’s mom said her husband doesn’t usually drive that way home, we got lucky! Merci Père Celeste, He was looking out for us :)
Sunday at church a member’s American friend was there because he’s visiting from Texas. It felt super weird talking to someone in English who wasn’t my companion. While talking to him I wanted to say something but I could only think of how to say it in French. It wasn’t even complicated, all I wanted to say was « Come to the party on Friday, there’s going to be lots of good food », but for some reason the words just weren’t coming to me in English. So I just said it in French, luckily he understands haha
Yesterday at church I heard a line in the hymn « Joseph Smith’s First Prayer » that really stuck out to me. In French it’s « Mais plus fort que l’adversaire, il vanquit grace à la foi ». Translated into English it’d be « But stronger than the adversary, he vanquished thanks to his faith ». The song is talking about how Joseph Smith felt Satan’s power super strongly when he was trying to pray in the woods. Satan knew Joseph Smith was doing something good that would result in an amazing consequence of events, so he was trying his hardest to stop him. Joseph Smith said in that moment it felt like all this darkness was consuming him, to the point where it seemed like it would destroy him, but he got through thanks to his faith. Us,too, are stronger than Satan and can vanquish him thanks to our faith! Whatever doubt, discouragement, fear, or anxiety he tries to put in our head, we are strong enough to break through and come out victorious! We are SO much stronger than him. Never listen to Satan and his lies! Anything good comes from God and anything bad comes from Satan, so don’t listen!! Heavenly Father sees you as a special child of His, infinitely loved and infinity valued. He wants us to be so so happy and live righteously so that we may one day return home to Him after our life here on Earth is done. He would never want you to believe anything different. So don’t!
On Saturday I hit my 4 month mark, I could hardly believe it! I don’t know how time is going by so quickly! This past transfer has seriously gone by so fast. I love my mission so much and feel so lucky that I get to serve here in French Polynesia and to have experienced everything that I have. I never want to go home!

Solitamente la gente ci dà tonnellate di mango ma ultimamente abbiamo avuto l'ananas, il che è grandioso perché qui l'ananas è buonissima e cento volte meglio che negli Stati Uniti! L'unico problema è che non abbiamo nulla di buono con cui tagliarla! Tutto quello che abbiamo in casa sono coltelli per spalmare il burro e due coltelli da bistecca che sono inutili. Così ho dovuto tagliare l'ananas con un gigantesco coltello da bistecca, è stato stancante perché la lama non era affilata e mi sentivo come un macellaio con quel coltello. È stata una cosa proprio da ridere. Ho quasi desiderato di avere un macete così avrei potuto provare con quello ma non fa niente! Poi quella sera stavo provando ad aprire una lattina di passata di pomodoro ma il nostro apriscatole non funzionava neppure. Così Sorella Hemsley ha aperto la lattina prendendola a colpi di coltellaccio da bistecca, era così
comico. Momenti disperati richiedono sistemi disperati!
La settimana scorsa a Huahine:
LE TELEFONATE PER I TRASFERIMENTI sono arrivate venerdì sera! La buona notizia è che rimango a Huahine! Ero abbastanza sicura di rimanere ma non si può sapere mai, così ero ansiosa lo stesso. Sono molto felice di rimanere, non me ne volevo andare per niente! Questo trasferimento probabilmente sarà il mio ultimo qui il che vuol dire che partirei alla fine di gennaio ma sono molto grata per l'opportunità di rimanere un po' di più! La notizia triste è che non ci saranno Anziani trasferiti ad Haapu ancora :( Io e Sorella Hemsley siamo rimaste molto deluse, volevamo tanto che gli Anziani tornassero! Amo Huahine con tutto il mio cuore, ma essere così isolate dagli altri missionari è davvero triste a volte. Ma come ho constatato molte volte in missione, il piano di Dio è sempre il migliore. Al momento è molto difficile per me capire come il non riavere gli Anziani sia la cosa giusta, ma so che devo ingoiare ogni amarezza o tristezza e confidare nel Signore. È difficile avere fede quando non si capisce e non si riesce a vedere tutto in prospettiva, ma bisogna avere fede lo stesso. "La tua volontà sia fatta, O Signore, e non la mia". A stento la zona è cambiata il che è molto insolito. A volte qui abbiamo mini trasferimenti, cioè c'è un trasferimento a metà trasferimento. Così tra tre settimane, l'8 gennaio, alcune persone saranno spostate. Penso che parte della zona cambierà allora. Ma avremo anche i trasferimenti regolari il 29 gennaio, alla fine del periodo di 6 settimane.
Questa settimana io e Sorella Hemsley abbiamo fatto i brownies da portare a casa delle persone. Abbiamo trovato alcune scatole di ingredienti per fare i brownies al negozio. Ebbene, ne abbiamo aperto una e c'erano RAGNATELE dentro. Che schifo! Ne abbiamo aperto un'altra e versato il contenuto nella ciotola e Sorella Hemsley ha detto "Uuh, si muove!!!". È venuto fuori che c'erano insetti in quella... fortunatamente le altre scatole erano a posto. Abbiamo preso i brownies e vi abbiamo messo una scrittura sopra, insieme al cartoncino da visita di Sii Una Luce con un nostro messaggio. Poi l'abbiamo portata da alcuni simpatizzanti che non abbiamo visto da un po' di tempo. È stato bellissimo, sono rimasti molto colpiti! Vorrei incoraggiare tutti voi a cercare alcune piccole cose da fare per aiutare le persone. Il mondo sarebbe un posto molto migliore se ognuno si sforzasse di più di amare e di aiutare coloro che ci circondano! Un membro qui mi ha detto "Noi non avremo tutte le luci elaborate di natale che ci sono negli Stati Uniti, ma le luci qui sono nel cuore delle persone e nelle loro famiglie". Parau Mau! Vero! So che possiamo avere quella luce nei nostri cuori se cerchiamo di trovare le occasioni per servire e condividere l'amore e la felicità!
NOTIZIA STRABILIANTE!!! I genitori di Mary e Taylor hanno acconsentito al loro battesimo e così abbiamo fissato la data al 30 dicembre!! Sono così felice e le bambine sono pure molto felici! Abbiamo fatto una prova di intervista battesimale con loro e si sono ricordate bene tutto quello che abbiamo insegnato loro, sono rimasta molto colpita! Sono così pronte! Le amo tanto, mi sento benedetta per il fatto che le potrò vedere battezzare. Hanno solo 8 e 9 anni ma sono grandi esempi per tutta la famiglia! Stiamo ancora aspettando il permesso dai genitori per molti dei nostri simpatizzanti così spero che tutto vada a finire bene.
Giovedì c'è stato un concerto di natale interconfessionale per tutte le denominazioni cristiane di Fare! È stato fortissimo! Cattolici, Evangelici, Pentecostali ed Avventisti hanno tutti cantato. E anche noi, ovviamente! Dalla nostra chiesa hanno selezionato alcuni bambini della Primaria come parte del coro, è stato così carino! Amo così tanto i bambini in chiesa, passare il tempo con loro è divertente. Amo i miei piccoli amici!
Questa settimana la macchina si è di nuovo surriscaldata e io e Sorella Hemsley non sapevamo perché dato che avevamo fatto riparare la ventola. Allora eravamo sedute sul bordo della montagna, lungo la strada verso la casa di Aitu, quando suo padre è passato in macchina. Ha guardato sotto il cofano della macchina e ha capito subito cosa non andava. A quanto pare non c'era acqua per il motore, ohoh. Non conosco per niente come funzionano le macchine così non sapevo di dover controllare quello, nessuno ce l'aveva detto! E per qualche motivo il meccanico non lo ha notato quando siamo andate da lui. Ma va tutto bene, abbiamo capito ora! S'imparano tante cose in missione ;) Così speriamo che quello sia stato l'ultimo dei nostri problemi con la macchina, anche l'aria condizionata in macchina ora funziona! (meno male, faceva così caldo questa settimana che mi stavo sciogliendo). Ma la madre di Aitu ci ha detto che suo marito non guida solitamente per quella strada per tornare a casa, siamo state fortunate! Merci Père Celeste, Lui si è preso cura di noi .)
Domenica in chiesa un amico americano di un membro era in visita dal Texas. È stato stranissimo parlare in inglese con qualcuno che non fosse la mia collega. Mentre stavo parlando con lui volevo dire qualcosa ma mi veniva in mente solo in francese. Non era neppure complicato, tutto ciò che volevo dire era "Vieni alla festa venerdì, ci sarà un sacco di cibo" ma per qualche motivo le parole in inglese non mi venivano. Così l'ho detto in francese, fortunatamente lo capisce ahah.
Ieri in chiesa mentre ascoltavo l'inno "Il mattino era sereno" alcune parole mi sono rimaste impresse. In francese dice "Mais plus fort que l’adversaire, il vanquit grace à la foi" che tradotto significa "Ma più forte dell'avversario, ha vinto grazie alla sua fede". L'inno parla di come Joseph Smith abbia sentito il potere di Satana in maniera molto possente quando stava provando a pregare nel bosco. Satana sapeva che Joseph Smith stava per fare qualcosa di buono che avrebbe generato un'incredibile successione di eventi così stava facendo di tutto per fermarlo. Joseph Smith disse che in quel momento gli sembrava di essere consumato dalle tenebre fino al punto che pensava di venire completamente annientato, ma riuscì a prevalere grazie alla sua fede. Anche noi siamo più forti di Satana e possiamo vincerlo grazie alla nostra fede! Qualunque dubbio, scoraggiamento, paura o ansia egli cerchi di mettere nella nostra testa, siamo abbastanza forti da superarli e uscirne vittoriosi! Siamo molto più forti di lui. Non prestate mai ascolto a Satana e alle sue bugie! Tutto ciò che è buono viene da Dio e tutto ciò che è cattivo viene da Satana, così non ascoltate!! Il Padre Celeste vi vede come uno dei suoi figli speciali, infinitamente amato e d'infinito valore. Vuole che noi siamo felici e che viviamo in rettitudine così da poter un giorno tornare a vivere con Lui dopo che la nostra vita sulla Terra qui è finita. Non vorrebbe mai che crediate alcunché di diverso. Allora non fatelo!
Sabato ho completato il mio quarto mese in missione, ci credo a stento! Non capisco come il tempo possa passare così velocemente! Quest'ultimo trasferimento è davvero volato via! Amo così tanto la mia missione e mi sento così fortunata di poter servire qui nella Polinesia francese e di avere avuto tante belle esperienze. Non vorrei mai tornare a casa!
