Weekly Email 15: Food Truck for Thanksgiving Dinner

How has another week gone by already?! I hope everyone back home in the US had a great Thanksgiving! I honestly had no idea when Thanksgiving was until the week before, and then I forgot about it until the day before. It didn’t feel like Thanksgiving here at all, obviously, since no one celebrates it. It doesn’t even feel like November here because it’s so hot! It’s like I’m stuck in a time loop with no seasons. It really weirds me out to see pictures of people back home in coats and scarves haha My Thanksgiving dinner was poulet citron, poisson cru chinois, and rice that someone payed for me and Soeur Hemsley to get from the food truck on ville. Not quite the meal I’m used to on Thanksgiving but it had to do hahaha

This past week on Huahine:

We may be having a baptism on December 8 for Mary and Taylor, but I will have to keep you all posted on that because not sure if it will actually be able to happen….but I’m hoping for the best! We should be figuring that out this week. Another one of our kid amis is so ready for baptism, but her dad won’t say yes! Her mom wants to get baptized so bad too but her partner refuses to marry her so she can’t :( But me and Soeur Hemsley are going to talk to them all with Bishop and his wife, and hopefully we can figure something out. John and Joseph can’t get baptized either still because of the social system (they are foster kids), which is so annoying because they are so ready!! And another one of our potential baptisms left for Tahiti for a month…so that’s what’s going on over here. BUT I know God can work miracles so I’m not giving up hope! Other than that we’ve been teaching lots of lessons and we have lots of references and people to re-contact so that’s awesome! The ward members are super awesome here and really helpful when it comes to missionary work!
Everything is going in great in Haapu!! Going over there is actually so much fun! The DMP (ward mission leader) over there is hilarious, and he’s been helping us out a lot. Our amis over there are super awesome, and almost all of them were at church on Sunday! Yesterday we went to church in Haapu since we have to switch off now with Fare. It felt weird at first being in a new ward but it was a super good time! Everyone there was really welcoming and I already knew some people there that I met last transfer!
There’s a member in Fare here that’s a baker, and he gives bread to me and Souer Hemsley a lot. It’s always different but always SO GOOD. I get so excited whenever he gives us a bag with his Nutella brioches or coconut bread. YUM. #blessed
One night me and Soeur Hemsley sat on the dock downtown and watched the sun set! It was so beautiful and peaceful! For a second I could almost trick my brain into thinking I was on vacation :’) There were also people in a house boat thing out on the ocean and it was cruising around the harbor! I want to go on one, it seems like a party!
We got pizza from the Italians one night and it was actually so hard to speak Italian haha every time I would try to think in Italian my brain would just come up with French! I’ve just gotten way more used to speaking French. Oh well, I know my Italian will come back to me once I go home. But on the bright side, it’s getting easier and easier to speak French! I’ve been speaking so much this transfer and it’s awesome to see the improvement!
To get to one of our amis in Haapu, Paul, you have to walk down this super rocky coastline for forever to get to his house. But it’s right on the beach and the view is gorgeous! Since it’s so far from the road when you’re at his house you can’t see any other houses or any of the rest of the town! So you can pretend you’re on a deserted island, it’s pretty cool.
Fun fact: the island in Moana shaped like a woman is based off of HUAHINE! Huahine is shaped like that!

Funny moments:

One day I was just sitting in the house when I look out the sliding glass door and see a huge dog chasing a chicken down the yard. The chicken is freaking out and flies full speed straight into the glass door with a huge SMACK, and then just falls to the ground. It was so funny!!
Thursday we were driving to a lesson and it was pouring rain but also super sunny at the same time. I don’t get how that works!
People here love to do wheelies on their bike, it’s called a hape. I’ve also seen guys doing wheelies on motorcycles as they drive past us! People here are nuts.
Guys here think me and my companion are super awesome, mostly for the fact that we’re American. Whenever we drive past they get super excited and yell out bonjour. One even blew me a kiss one time hahaha I waved to a group of guys at the store once and from the way they reacted you’d think I was a celebrity. It’s so funny hahaha i’ve definitely never gotten this much attention before just by driving or walking down the road.
Everyone here is related to each other! We went to find a reference last week and we had 4 different people in the ward all tell us they were related to her.
There’s a lot of weird fruit here! There’s a fruit that has huge black seeds half the size of my thumb. I could’ve sworn someone told me once that they’re edible so I ate one. BIG MISTAKE. It was SO GROSS. I immediately spit it out and I had the worst taste in my mouth!
A bug flew down my shirt during ward council and got stuck, that was fun.
People here love to say English phrases to me and my companion, it’s so funny! They just say things like « Hello, how are you? » and « Good! » or « yes! ». in their cute accents. They’re so proud of it too, I love it!

There’s so many entertaining moments that happen here, I don’t even write half of them. Most of it is just from how people act, a lot of the people I know or see around could have a TV character modeled after them. Me and Soeur Miller always joked that living here is like being in an episode of The Office, it’s just so ridiculous sometimes. I love it!! Keeps life interesting.

The Tahiti Pape’ete Mission started something on November 1 called Trois Mois de Joie! We’re reading the whole Book of Mormon in 3 months, and we mark each time there’s a reference to Christ or joy. It’s been cool seeing how often Christ’s name is mentioned on every page! Also this week when teaching Taylor we just showed her a bunch of pictures that depict scenes from the Bible and Christ’s life. It was so awesome, you just feel so much love for our Savior by looking at them. I felt the Spirit very strong! I am so grateful for our loving brother Jesus Christ and for everything He did for us! I am so privileged to be able to be His representative! Also this week while teaching Reva we talked about The Law of Chastity and how it helps us be worthy to enter the temple, and to one day be married and sealed in there so that we can have an eternal family! I am so grateful for temples and for the opportunity to be with my family forever! Teaching the commandments over and over again on my mission has really helped me see the importance of them. I know that as we follow the commandments we will be blessed and know true JOY in this life and the next! One of our amis in Haapu, Manua, has had to sacrifice so much because of his desire to be baptized! I am always amazed by people like him. A lot has been required of him but he still has so much faith and cannot wait to be baptized! It’s because he knows this gospel, the gospel of Jesus Christ, is true and worth everything! I am so grateful for this gospel and for the happiness it has brought me. It really has given me everything good in my life. And life is so good!! I love Huahine and my two secteurs (areas) and all the people here so much! I seriously just feel so much gratitude in my heart each day that I get to be here and experience everything that I can! Reading everyone's emails about Thanksgiving has made me think a lot about gratitude! It's so important, and just like happiness, it depends entirely on what's going on inside of you and nothing at all with what's going on outside of you! Mindset is everything! GOD IS GOOD AND LIFE IS GREAT!!!!

Com'è potuta passare già un'altra settimana?! Spero che voi tutti che siete a casa negli Stati Uniti abbiate potuto passare un bellissimo Giorno del Ringraziamento! Onestamente non avevo idea di quando fosse il Giorno del Ringraziamento fino alla settimana prima e poi me ne sono dimenticata fino al giorno prima. Non sembrava il Giorno del Ringraziamento qui per niente, ovviamente, perché nessuno lo festeggia. Non sembra neanche novembre qui perché fa così caldo! È come se fossi bloccata in un circuito temporale senza stagioni. Mi fa sentire strana vedere foto di persone negli Stati Uniti che indossano giacche e sciarpe ahah. La mia cena per il Giorno del Ringraziamento è stata pollo al limone, pesce crudo cinese e riso che qualcuno ha pagato per me e sorella Hemsley da prendere dal furgone del cibo in città. Non proprio il tipo di pasto a cui sono abituata durante il Giorno del Ringraziamento ma ha dovuto funzionare ahahah

Questa scorsa settimana a Huahine:

Potremmo avere un battesimo l'8 dicembre per Mary e Taylor ma dovrò confermarvelo perché non sono sicura che avverrà...ma spero per il meglio! Dovremmo poterlo stabilire questa settimana. Un altro dei nostri contatti bambini è così pronto per il battesimo ma suo padre non vuole acconsentire! Anche sua madre vuole così tanto essere battezzata ma il suo partner si rifiuta di sposarla così lei non può farlo :( Ma io e Sorella Hemsley parleremo con tutti loro insieme al vescovo e a sua moglie e forse possiamo trovare una soluzione. Anche John e Joseph non possono battezzarsi ancora per via del sistema sociale (sono in affidamento), il che è davvero spiacevole perché sono così pronti!! E un altro dei nostri potenziali battesimi è partito per Tahiti per un mese... così questo è ciò che sta succedendo qui. MA io so che Dio può fare miracoli così non perdo le speranze! A parte questo stiamo insegnando un sacco di lezioni, abbiamo un sacco di riferimenti e persone da ricontattare il che è favoloso! I membri dei rioni sono super favolosi qui e di molto aiuto quando si tratta di lavoro missionario!
Tutto va a gonfie vele ad Haapu!! Andare lì in realtà è davvero divertente! Il dirigente del lavoro missionario è simpaticissimo e ci sta aiutando molto. I nostri simpatizzanti sono favolosi e quasi tutti erano in chiesa domenica! Ieri siamo andati in chiesa ad Haapu dal momento che dobbiamo fare a turno con Fare. È stato strano all'inizio stare in un nuovo rione ma poi è stato bellissimo! Tutti lì sono stati molto accoglienti e conoscevo già qualcuno dallo scorso trasferimento!
C'è un membro qui a Fare che è panettiere e dà a me e a sorella Hemsley un sacco di pane. È sempre diverso ma sempre COSÌ BUONO! Sono sempre molto contenta quando ci dà una busta con le sue briosches alla Nutella o il pane al cocco. Che buoni! #sonobenedetta
Una sera io e Sorella Hemsley ci siamo sedute sul molo in città e abbiamo visto il tramonto! Era così bello e pacifico! Per un momento ho quasi potuto ingannare il mio cervello e credere di stare in vacanza :') C'erano anche persone su una specie di casa galleggiante sull'oceano che stava facendo un giro della baia! Volevo andare su una di quelle, sembrava una festa!
Abbiamo preso la pizza dagli italiani una sera ed è stato così difficile per me parlare italiano ahah ogni volta che provavo a pensare in italiano il mio cervello lo faceva in francese! Mi sono abituata molto di più con il francese. Oh va bene, lo so che il mio italiano ritornerà quando torno a casa. Ma, positivamente parlando, sta diventando sempre più facile parlare francese! Ho parlato così tanto in questo trasferimento ed è meraviglioso vedere il miglioramento!
Per andare a casa di un nostro simpatizzante, Paul, dobbiamo camminare a lungo su questa costiera rocciosa. Ma è direttamente sulla spiaggia e la vista è splendida! Dato che casa sua è molto lontana dalla strada non si possono vedere altre case e nemmeno il resto della città! Così si può fingere di essere su un'isola deserta, è proprio forte!
Fatto interessante: l'isola nel film Oceania a forma di donna è basata su HUAHINE! Huahine ha quella forma!

Momenti buffi:

Un giorno ero seduta in casa e ho visto fuori dalla porta a vetri un grosso cane che inseguiva una gallina nel giardino. La gallina era terrorizzata ed è volata a tutta velocità contro la porta a vetri andandosi a schiantare fragorosamente contro di essa e poi è caduta a terra stordita. È stato così da ridere!!
Giovedì stavamo guidando per andare ad una lezione e stava piovendo a dirotto ma era anche molto soleggiato allo stesso tempo. Non capisco come possa succedere!
La gente qui ama andare in bici in equilibrio sulla ruota posteriore. Ho visto ragazzi farlo anche con le moto quando ci superano! La gente qui fa cose pazzoidi.
I ragazzi qui pensano che io e la mia collega siamo fantastiche, per lo più perché siamo americane. Ogni volta che li superiamo in macchina si emozionano e ci gridano dietro "bonjour". Uno mi ha anche lanciato un bacio al volo una volta ahah. Ho salutato con la mano un gruppo di ragazzi una volta in un negozio e dal modo in cui hanno reagito sembrava che io fossi una celebrità. È così da ridere questa cosa ahahah Sicuramente non ho mai ricevuto tutta questa attenzione finora soltanto guidando o camminando per strada.
Tutti qui sono imparentati! Siamo andate a trovare un riferimento la settimana scorsa e c'erano quattro membri nel rione che ci hanno detto di essere tutti imparentati con lei.
C'è un sacco di frutta strana qui! C'è un tipo di frutta che ha dei semi neri grandi quanto la metà del mio pollice. Avrei giurato che qualcuno mi avesse detto tempo fa che erano commestibili così ne ho mangiato uno. GROSSO ERRORE. Faceva COSÌ SCHIFO. L'ho sputato subito ma mi è rimasto un sapore orribile in bocca!
Un insetto è volato sulla mia maglietta durante il consiglio di rione ed è rimasto attaccato, "divertente"!
La gente qui ama dire frasi in inglese a me e alla mia collega, è così buffo! Dicono cose tipo "Hello, how are you?" e "Good!" oppure "Yes!" con il loro accento grazioso. Ne vanno pure così fieri, mi fanno morire!

Ci sono tanti momenti di intrattenimento qui, non riesco a scrivere neanche metà di quello che succede. La maggior parte scaturisce da come la gente si comporta, un sacco di persone che conosco o vedo potrebbero avere un personaggio televisivo creato apposta per loro. Io e Sorella Miller eravamo solite scherzare sul fatto che vivere qui è come stare in un episodio di The Office, è così ridicolo a volte. Mi piace un sacco!!! Rende la vita interessante.

La Missione di Tahiti Pape'ete ha iniziato qualcosa il primo novembre che si chiama Trois Mois de Joie! (Tre Mesi di Gioia). Stiamo leggendo l'intero Libro di Mormon in tre mesi e sottolineamo ogni riferimento che troviamo a Cristo o alla gioia. È stato forte vedere quanto spesso viene citato il nome di Cristo su ogni pagina! Inoltre la settimana scorsa mentre insegnavamo a Taylor le abbiamo mostrato diverse foto che descrivono scene tratte dalla Bibbia e dalla vita di Gesù Cristo. È stato stupendo, si sente tanto amore per il nostro Salvatore soltanto guardandole. Ho sentito lo Spirito molto forte! Sono così grata per il nostro beneamato fratello Gesù Cristo e per tutto quello che Lui ha fatto per noi! Sono così privilegiata ad essere la sua rappresentante!

Questa settimana mentre insegnavamo a Reva abbiamo parlato della Legge di Castità e di come ci aiuta ad essere degni di entrare nel tempio e a sposarci ed essere suggellati per poter avere una famiglia eterna! Sono così grata per i templi e per l'opportunità di essere con la mia famiglia per sempre! Insegnare ripetutamente i comandamenti in missione mi ha davvero aiutato a vederne l'importanza! So che se obbediremo ai comandamenti saremo benedetti e conosceremo la vera GIOIA in questa vita e nella successiva! Uno dei nostri simpatizzanti di Haapu, Manua, ha dovuto sacrificare tanto per il suo desiderio di essere battezzato! Sono sempre meravigliata da persone come lui. Molto gli è stato richiesto ma ha ancora tanta fede e non vede l'ora di essere battezzato! È perché conosce che questo vangelo, il vangelo di Gesù Cristo, è vero e degno di ogni cosa! Sono tanto grata per questo vangelo e la felicità che mi ha portato. Mi ha dato tutto ciò di buono che ho nella vita. E la vita è così bella!!! Amo tantissimo Huahine e le mie due aree e tutte le persone lì! Provo seriamente tanta gratitudine nel mio cuore ogni giorno in cui posso essere qui e sperimentare tutto quello che posso! Leggere i vostri email sul Giorno del Ringraziamento mi ha fatto pensare molto alla gratitudine! È così importante e, come le felicità, dipende interamente da cosa accade dentro di noi e per niente da ciò che accade al di fuori di noi! Lo stato mentale è tutto! DIO È BUONO E LA VITA VA ALLA GRANDE!!!!!!!!
