Weekly Email 11: A Kid Thought I was 41..?!

Ia orana tout le monde! I can’t believe another week has passed by already! Lots of good stuff has happened!
First off, to address my subject line, me and Soeur Miller teach a girl called Mary. I asked her sister Taylor how old she was, and she said 8. Then I asked her how old she thought I was and she was like 30? And I said WHAT?? So then she guessed 41 and I was like WHAT THE HECK I’m 19!! Hahaha what in the world. I had no idea I looked so old?
So anyways hahah other funny stuff from this week:
I had dinner at a member’s house and they love to joke around! I said « Mauruuru » which means thank you, and they were like who taught you that? Don’t you know that’s a swear? And I was like nice try! That’s one of the first words I learned!
It is SO HOT here! It was already hot and humid but it’s just getting hotter and hotter! Riding bikes is kind of awful because you sweat so much. One day I saw people wearing sweatshirts though and it was so hot!! I will never understand!
Last Monday I heard a song by Calvin Harris and Rihanna playing downtown and I realized that’s the first American song I’ve heard in 2 months! I’m going to be super out of the loop when I get home.
This past week on Huahine:
Last p-day was SO COOL. Me and Soeur Miller hiked to the top of this hill and the view was AMAZING. Then we got to go out in a boat. The view of the island was incredible and the water was such a bright shade of blue!! It was so cool! I can’t even describe it, you just have to look at the pictures I took! Also we met this man who makes seashell jewelry by hand, it was so incredible! Some of it is super intricate!
I have started Driving 101 with Soeur Miller so I can learn stick because our car is manual. It hasn’t been as bad as I thought it would be! I need to practice more but I think I’m getting the hang of it!
I saw whales the other day!!
Tuesday was such a good day! So Hallie is a recent convert who got baptized with her husband Ben. Me and Soeur Miller are currently teaching their son Aitu. Hallie has some friends from the Catholic church so we went together to go meet them. They’re an older couple called Tina and Christopher! They’re super awesome! They loved having us over and said we can come back next week for a lesson! So hooray for having 2 new amis!! Christopher has cancer, which is super sad, but he’s getting a priesthood blessing this week which I think will be super awesome for him! Having Hallie there was super awesome since she already knows them, and it was cool to hear her talk about her experience in finding the Mormon church and how it changed her life and made it so much better!
Tuesday we also finally met with Maire! We had tried to meet with her 3 times already but each time she canceled, so I was super happy that it didn’t fall through this time. She is so ready for baptism! She was previously taught by other missionaries and would’ve gotten baptized if it wasn’t for the fact she had to get married first. A lot of people here live with their boyfriend or girlfriend and just never get married. So me and Soeur Miller are hoping we can help her with that!
Tuesday we also had a ward FHE and me and Soeur Miller were in charge of the activity. We did Minute to Win It games! I doubt the people here have ever played or heard of the games before so it was super funny. Everyone got really competitive though!
Thursday a sister missionary who served in Huahine 2 years ago (Sister Hillier) came to visit with her mom and brother! We had dinner all together with them and some members and it was super fun! Also their brother was in Soeur Miller’s MTC district so it was super cool that she got to meet them by coincidence.
Saturday into Sunday me and Soeur Miller did a fast for our amis. We have a lot of them who have complicated family situations that make baptism difficult. Right at the end of our fast, Aitu’s dad told us that Aitu has finally decided to get baptized!!!! I was so happy! I legit started tearing up when I found out! Fasts work, it’s a miracle!! It was so cool. Aitu has been taking lessons since April and it so ready for baptism but for some reason he didn’t think he was ready. Every time we asked about it he just said « soon » and it seemed like it was never going to happen! But he’s getting baptized November 11, and then this spring his family is going to the temple to be sealed! YAY!!!
The same family that was joking with me about Mauruuru taught me how to play the spoons! It was cool but it made my fingers hurt. It was super awesome though because they can all play ukulele and guitar super well, so they played some songs and sang in Tahitian! The guys also showed us a dance they’re learning!
Missions are hard, you have so many cool experiences but you definitely have moments where you get discouraged or down on yourself, or just tired of some things. Or you miss home and some things from your old life. But through it all, you just keep pressing forward! If there’s one thing I’ve learned from my mission, it’s that you never give up! You just keep working hard and you can always bounce back! These past 2 and a half months have been life changing and I wouldn’t trade it for anything! I love my mission and I am very grateful to be in Huahine!

Ia orana tout le monde! Non posso crederci che sia passata già un'altra settimana! Un sacco di belle cose sono accadute!
Per cominciare e per spiegare il titolo, io e Sorella Miller insegnamo a una bambina che si chiama Mary. Ho chiesto a sua sorella Taylor quanti anni avesse, e ha detto 8. Poi le ho chiesto quanti anni pensasse che avessi io e lei mi ha detto 30? E io COSA?? Così ha provato a indovinare 41 e io CHE DIAMINE, ho 19 anni!!! Ahahahah da non crederci. Non avevo idea che sembrassi così vecchia!
Va be' comunque ahahah altre cose da ridere di questa settimana:
Siamo andate a cena a casa di alcuni membri e loro amano scherzare! Ho detto "Mauruuru" che significa grazie e loro mi fanno "Chi ti ha insegnato queste cose? Non lo sai che è una parolaccia?" E io "Non ci casco! Quella è una delle prime parole che ho imparato!"
Fa COSÌ CALDO QUI! Era già caldo e umido ma diventa sempre più caldo! Andare in bicicletta è proprio tremendo perché si suda tanto. Un giorno ho visto delle persone con le felpe e faceva così caldo! Non lo capirò mai!
Lunedì scorso ho sentito una canzone di Calvin Harris e Rihanna in città e mi sono resa conto che quella era la prima canzone americana che ho sentito da due mesi a questa parte! Sarò completamente fuori dal giro quando torno a casa.
Questa settimana passata a Huahine:
Il P-day passato è stato COSÌ FORTE! Io e Sorella Miller ci siamo arrampicate fino alla cima di una collina e la vista era MERAVIGLIOSA. Poi siamo uscite a fare un giro in barca. Il panorama dell'isola era incredibile e l'acqua era di un blu cristallino!!! Era così bello! Non riesco nemmeno a descriverlo, dovete solo guardare le foto che ho fatto! Abbiamo anche incontrato un uomo che fa i gioielli a mano con le conchiglie, era così incredibile! Alcuni erano proprio elaborati!
Ho iniziato Driving 101 con Sorella Miller così posso imparare a usare la frizione perché la nostra macchina ha il cambio manuale. Non è stato così male come credevo che fosse! Ho bisogno di praticare di più ma credo che ci stia prendendo la mano!
Ho visto le balene l'altro giorno!!
Martedì è stato un bel giorno! Allora Hallie è una recente convertita che si è battezzata con suo marito Ben. Io e Sorella Miller stiamo ora insegnando a loro figlio Aitu. Hallie ha alcuni amici cattolici così siamo andati insieme a incontrarli. Sono una coppia più grande e si chiamano Tina e Christopher! Sono bravissimi! A loro piace riceverci e hanno detto che possiamo tornare la settimana prossima per fare una lezione! Così urrà per avere 2 nuovi amis!! Christopher ha il cancro, il che è tristissimo, ma gli verrà data una benedizione del sacerdozio questa settimana, il che penso sarà bellissimo per lui! Avere Hallie con noi lì è stato stupendo perché li conosce già ed è stato forte sentirle dire di come abbia trovato la chiesa Mormone e di come le abbia cambiato in meglio la vita!
Martedì ci siamo anche incontrate finalmente con Maire. Abbiamo provato già tre volte ad incontrarci con lei ma ha cancellato ogni volta così ero proprio contentissima di averlo potuto fare questa volta. È così pronta per il battesimo! Altri missionari le hanno insegnato in passato e si sarebbe già battezzata se non fosse per il fatto che deve sposarsi prima. Molte persone qui convivono e non si sposano mai. Così io e Sorella Miller speriamo di poterla aiutare in questo!
Martedì abbiamo anche fatto una serata familiare con il rione e io e Sorella Miller eravamo incaricate dell'attività . Abbiamo fatto i giochi di Minute to Win It! Dubito che le persone qui abbiano mai sentito parlare di questi giochi o che li abbiano mai fatti prima così è stato divertentissimo. E tutti sono stati molto competitivi!
Giovedì una sorella che ha servito a Huahine 2 anni fa (Sorella Hillier) è venuta in visita con sua madre e suo fratello! Abbiamo cenato tutti insieme anche con alcuni membri ed è stato divertentissimo! E poi suo fratello è stato nello stesso distretto al MTC con Sorella Miller così è stato fortissimo che abbiano potuto incontrarsi per puro caso.
Da sabato a domenica io e Sorella Miller abbiamo digiunato per i nostri amis. Ne abbiamo tanti con situazioni familiari complicate che rendono i battesimi difficili. Proprio alla fine del nostro digiuno il padre di Aitu ci ha detto che Aitu ha finalmente deciso di farsi battezzare!!!!! Ero così felice! Avevo proprio tutte le ragioni di avere le lacrime agli occhi quando l'ho saputo! Il digiuno funziona, è un miracolo!! È stato così forte! Aitu ha preso le lezioni da aprile ed è così pronto per il battesimo ma per qualche motivo credeva di non esserlo. Ogni volta che glielo chiedevamo diceva "presto" e sembrava che non sarebbe successo mai! Ma si battezzerà l'11 novembre e poi in primavera la sua famiglia andrà al tempio a farsi suggellare! EVVIVA!
La stessa famiglia che stava scherzando con me su Mauruuru mi ha insegnato come suonare con i cucchiai! Era forte ma mi sono fatta male alle dita. È stato fortissimo proprio perché sanno tutti suonare l'ukelele e la chitarra benissimo, così hanno suonato alcune canzoni e hanno cantato in taitiano! Ci hanno anche mostrato una danza che stanno imparando!
Le missioni sono difficili, si fanno tante belle esperienze ma ci sono di sicuro dei momenti in cui ci si sente scoraggiati o giù o solo stanchi di alcune cose. Oppure ci manca casa e alcune cose della nostra vecchia vita. Ma nonostante tutte queste cose si va avanti! Se c'è una cosa che ho imparato dalla mia missione è che non si deve mollare mai! Bisogna lavorare duro e ci si rialza sempre! Questi ultimi due mesi e mezzo sono stati un cambiamento per me e non li cambierei con nessun'altra cosa al mondo! Amo la mia missione e sono molto grata di stare a Huahine!
